Privacy Policy
1. Commitment to Privacy
CourseMap is committed to protecting the privacy of individuals in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the thirteen Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). This Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that information.
2. Information We Collect
(a) Information you provide:
- Review content (scores, tags, and text) that you voluntarily submit
- Contact information (email address) if you choose to submit a message via our contact form
- Any other information you voluntarily provide when contacting us
(b) Technical information collected automatically:
- Session identifiers (used solely to prevent duplicate submissions within a single browsing session)
- Anonymised and hashed network identifiers (used solely for abuse prevention; stored in irreversible hashed form and cannot be used to identify you)
- Page view counts (aggregate, non-identifying data about which pages are visited)
We do not collect:
- Your name
- Your student ID number
- Precise location data
- Payment information
- Any government-issued identification
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect for the following purposes only:
(a) To operate the Platform: displaying reviews, calculating aggregate scores, and providing the course information service;
(b) To prevent abuse: detecting and preventing spam, duplicate submissions, and coordinated manipulation of ratings;
(c) To respond to enquiries: responding to messages submitted through our contact form, where a contact email is provided;
(d) To improve the Platform: analysing aggregate, anonymised usage patterns to improve platform functionality.
We do not use your information for marketing purposes. We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties, except as required by law or as described in Section 4 below.
4. Disclosure of Information
We may disclose your information:
(a) Where required or authorised by Australian law, including disclosure to law enforcement agencies in response to a valid legal request;
(b) To our technical service providers (such as hosting providers) who are bound by confidentiality obligations and may not use your data for any other purpose;
(c) In connection with a transfer of ownership of the Platform, provided the new operator agrees to be bound by this Privacy Policy.
5. Data Retention
Review content is retained for as long as the Platform operates, or until you request its removal. Session and network identifiers used for abuse prevention are retained for no longer than 90 days. Contact form messages are retained for no longer than 12 months.
6. Your Rights
Under the Australian Privacy Principles, you have the right to:
(a) Access the personal information we hold about you;
(b) Correct personal information that is inaccurate, incomplete, or out of date;
(c) Request deletion of a review you have previously submitted. Note that anonymised aggregate scores derived from your review may be retained;
(d) Complain about our handling of your personal information to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at www.oaic.gov.au if you are not satisfied with our response.

7. Security
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference, loss, and unauthorised access, modification, or disclosure. These measures include hashing of network identifiers, secure hosting infrastructure, and restricted access to administrative systems.
However, no internet transmission is completely secure. We cannot guarantee the absolute security of information transmitted to or from the Platform.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be notified via a notice on the Platform homepage. Continued use of the Platform after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Policy.
